Key Features
Superelasticity
Allows the material to undergo large deformation and return to its original shape upon unloading.Biocompatibility
Suitable for long-term implantation and contact with human tissue.Shape Memory Effect
Allows the wire to return to a preset shape when heated above its transformation temperature.
Technical Explanation
Nitinol is a Shape Memory Alloy (SMA) that relies on a reversible phase transformation between two solid phases:
1. Austenite (High Temperature Phase)
Stronger and stiffer
Stable at higher temperatures
Remembers the "programmed" shape
2. Martensite (Low Temperature Phase)
Softer and easily deformable
Forms when cooled
Can be deformed significantly without permanent damage
Phase Transformation Process
When Nitinol cools down, it transforms from Austenite → Martensite.
When it is heated, it transforms back Martensite → Austenite, recovering its original shape.
This reversible transformation enables two key properties:
Shape Memory Effect
Deform the material when it is in the martensitic state → heat it → it returns to its original shape.
Superelasticity
When deformed in the austenitic state, Nitinol instantly snaps back to its original shape after the load is removed.
