ASTMF2063 Nitinol wire is a shape memory alloy made up of roughly equal parts of nickel and titanium. It is so named because it was discovered at the Naval Ordnance Laboratory (NOL) in the 1960s, here "nitinol" for nickel-titanium and "NOL" for Naval Ordnance Laboratory.

One of its most notable properties is nitinol wire with shape memory, which means that it can be deformed when cold but will return to its original shape when heated.
