IrTa Coating Titanium Anode For Cathodic Protection

mmo anode,mmo electrode,mmo titanium anode
Base material:titanium Gr1 or Gr2
Coating: iridium tantalum (IrTa) Coating
Type:Tube, plate, mesh, wire, rod
Application: for cathodic protection of metallic structures that are immersed in water or buried in soil

Product Introduction

IrTa-coated titanium anodes are advanced mixed metal oxide (MMO) electrodes designed for impressed current cathodic protection (ICCP) systems. They are widely used to protect metallic structures in seawater, soil, and industrial environments from corrosion.

The coating consists of iridium oxide (IrO₂) and tantalum oxide (Ta₂O₅) applied onto a titanium substrate, forming a stable, highly active, and long-life electrocatalytic surface.

Working Principle

In cathodic protection systems:

The titanium MMO anode acts as the auxiliary anode

When DC current is applied:

    • Electrons are supplied to the protected metal structure

    • The structure becomes the cathode

    • Corrosion reactions are suppressed

At the anode:

A slow, controlled electrochemical reaction occurs

The MMO coating provides catalytic activity for oxygen evolution

The titanium substrate remains structurally stable

This system effectively prevents corrosion of pipelines, tanks, and offshore structures.

Key Advantages

Excellent Corrosion Resistance
Ir-Ta coating is highly stable in seawater, soil, and chemical environments

Long Service Life
Low coating consumption rate ensures long-term operation

High Electrochemical Stability
Maintains performance under continuous current load

Low Consumption Rate
Typically very low coating loss (mg/A·year level)

High Current Efficiency
Suitable for large-scale ICCP systems

Dimensional Stability
Titanium substrate remains intact during operation

Application Case

In offshore oil and gas projects, Ir-Ta coated titanium anodes are installed on submerged steel structures such as platform legs. These anodes are connected to a DC power supply to provide continuous cathodic protection.

In seawater environments:

  • Chloride concentration is high

  • Corrosion rate is extremely aggressive

The Ir-Ta MMO coating ensures:

  • Stable long-term operation

  • Resistance to seawater corrosion

  • Reduced maintenance costs

Field applications show that ICCP systems using Ir-Ta titanium anodes significantly extend structure service life and reduce repair frequency.
